How to Help Your Clients Keep Their Jewelry Looking Like New
Your clients love their new jewelry, but do they know how to care for it?
Unless you want to see your masterpieces come back bent out of shape, prongs flattened, or diamonds chipped and lost (yes, weightlifting in fine jewelry can do that), it’s worth giving clients a few care tips before their new piece goes on its first adventure.
Here are four simple ways to keep their favorite pieces looking flawless for years to come:

1. INSURE YOUR JEWELRY (The Must-Have Safety Net!)
Let’s get real for a moment.
As a jewelry designer, I have a regret I don’t often talk about—but I will share it with you because I want to save your clients the heartbreak I went through.
Storytime…
In all my years in custom fine jewelry, my greatest regret is losing the first genuinely exceptional piece I ever created for myself...
RIP to my two-tone cocktail ring featuring a large lavender jadeite cabochon bezel set in rose gold. The bezel was adorned with hundreds of pave-set tiny pink diamonds soldered to a platinum split shank.
I loved everything about it… until it disappeared. After tearing my house apart, I had to face the worst part—I let the insurance lapse, and it's gone forever.
It's heartbreaking, and properly insuring jewelry is the best way for your clients to avoid that pain.
👉🏻Pro Tip: Always provide a Certificate of Sale with every jewelry pickup or send it via email, ensuring your clients have the necessary documentation for insurance and peace of mind.
2. DON’T SKIP ANNUAL CHECK-UPS (Your Jewelry’s Version of a Spa Day!)
Like a luxury car, rings (and other jewelry) need regular checkups to stay in top condition.
Remind and encourage your clients to schedule an annual visit for a professional cleaning and stone inspection at least once a year.
This is essential for maintaining the longevity and brilliance of their pieces.
It also ensures that the stones are secure, the setting is intact, and everything is wearing at a normal rate.
Once they see their jewelry sparkle after a deep clean, they'll want regular check-ups, and you’ll feel confident knowing their piece is well-maintained.

3. REMOVE JEWELRY DURING HEAVY LIFTING (Yes, Especially Weightlifting!)
It’s easy to forget that jewelry is a delicate work of art, and what’s hard on our rings can cause damage.
One of the top offenders is weightlifting.
Steel alloys (used in gym equipment) are harder than precious metals like gold and platinum, making it easy to damage rings when lifting.
You’ve probably seen the result—smashed prongs, crushed rings, and shattered stones.
Trust me, it happens more often than you think.
So, advise your clients to remove their rings before weight lifting, gardening, or cooking.
👉🏻Pro Tip: Suggest they keep a stylish bowl by their sink or home workout area to store their rings safely. Small habits have a big impact on jewelry longevity.

4. KEEP JEWELRY SPARKLING (Avoid Lotions, Makeup & Hair Products!)
Let’s talk about beauty routines.
It's true—beauty influencers look stunning applying lotion and makeup while wearing jewelry…
But lotion, makeup, and product buildup on rings? Not so fabulous. It's enough to make any jeweler cringe
Encourage clients to remove their rings before applying lotions, makeup, or hair products.
Bonus tip: Have them wait at least 10 minutes after applying hand lotion before putting their rings back on.
This helps keep diamonds sparkling by preventing buildup that can cloud their shine.
Final Thoughts: These tips will help keep your clients' jewelry looking pristine, and they’ll appreciate the advice on maintaining their investments.
