Using AI to Brainstorm Jewelry Designs

Whether it's writer's block or graphics for your creative work, AI is a must for your modern business.

Welcome to The Jewelry Obsessed, a supportive network for jewelry professionals. I'm Jenessa, a jewelry designer and fine jeweler with over 20 years of experience working for studios nationwide. Here, I share production techniques and insights to help you create jewelry that people can't live without.

Last week, I wrote about a bizarre yet romantic jewelry trend...

The Lover’s Eye Miniature. Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

The Lover's Eye was all the fashion back in the late 18th century…

It's one part jewelry, one part painting, and a backstory with a whole lot of socialite scandal.

If you missed part one, you can check it out here.

This week, I’m experimenting with two AI rendering programs, Midjourney and ChatGPT to quickly create modern interpretations of the Lover's Eye trend.

These tools are great for jumpstarting the design process in your business, whether you're facing creative block or need fast visuals for your design projects.

Let’s experiment!

I’m in love with robots…

OK… I'm joking, but I do love the time-saving benefits technology brings to my work!

As someone in my forties who witnessed the life-changing invention of the internet, I'm amazed by tools like AI and their potential to support our creative work.

If you lack inspiration or need help finding a starting point, try AI.

If you haven't played around with it, today is your day to test it out!

You don't have to be tech-savvy, and it's easy to use, and ChatGPT is free to try.

Which AI Program to Use?

I use the free version of ChatGPT by Open AI to help jumpstart, edit, and clarify my creative writing work almost daily.

Recently, ChatGPT started promoting its AI rendering software within the platform.

Since I was already there, I decided to experiment with their AI-rendering robot to see what it could do.

I have to admit, it is pretty cool and super easy to use.

Just create an account, click "create image," and then start to describe the jewelry design you'd like to create.

The trick is to be as specific as possible…

ChatGPT Interface

Start broad and then go narrow by using these shortcuts…

🎨 Describe the artistic style or design era using words like:

Deco, modern, or antique.

🛠️ Be clear on your materials by using words like:

14k yellow gold, platinum, or diamonds.

Get descriptive on textures and metal finishes using words like:

Rustic, shiny, or matte.

💡 Be specific on the lighting by using words like:

Cozy, candle-lit, or chiaroscuro.

🖌️ Describe the composition using words like:

Close-up, wide landscape, top-down, side-view, or through finger.

💃🏾 You can even specify what you want your model to look like!

It's a cool and helpful tool for any design field.

In a matter of seconds, voilà, you've got a high-quality rendering!

An AI generated modern take on the Lover’s Eye trend.

My honest unsponsored critique…

Although I do prefer the rendering quality of ChatGPT, it will only allow you to create three free rendering per day. After three renderings, the cost is $20/month.

The cost is too high to justify. I recommend Midjourney instead if you need to create more than three renderings.

Midjourney offers 200 renderings for $10 per month and works similarly to ChatGPT in terms of prompts. You can even upload your hand sketches and see how AI manipulates them.

While neither AI program can replace human creativity or a skillfully drawn hand sketch—and they didn't render my commands exactly as I envisioned—they were still a fun and quick way to generate ideas.

AI rendering is a valuable tool for your business—perfect as a starting point for design projects if you're stuck or need specific images for social media content.

You have to try it and share what you create!

Stay Inspired,

Jenessa

P.S. Next week, we will discuss the unstoppable popularity of ONE particular engagement ring design that has been going strong since 2012...
